Using CBD and THC Together

Once medical marijuana is legalized in South Carolina, you will be able to find CBD oils, prescription drugs containing synthetic THC or pure CBD, and a variety of medical marijuana products rich in THC and CBD.

Which Product Is the Best?

Research suggests that patients experience the most benefits when using CBD and THC together, along with other compounds found in cannabis. The collaboration between the compounds found in whole cannabis flowers is known as the entourage effect.

The Entourage Effect

In a 2010 study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, researchers compared a THC+CBD extract to a THC-only extract in the treatment of chronic pain related to cancer. The extract that contained both THC and CBD was found more effective in relieving pain than the THC-only extract.

When THC and CBD work together, more patients benefit from cannabis-based therapies. THC is the compound in cannabis that produces the euphoric effects. Some people enjoy the psychoactive effects, but other people would rather enjoy the health benefits of medical marijuana without the ‘high’ feeling. This is where CBD comes in. CBD can counteract some of THC’s intoxicating effects.

These studies suggest that patients may experience greater medicinal benefits and fewer side effects when they select a cannabis product that is rich in both THC and CBD. In fact, products that contain additional cannabis compounds beyond THC and CBD may offer further benefits.

Which Products Contain Other Cannabis Compounds in Addition to THC and CBD?

Dried cannabis flower is arguably the best source of natural cannabis compounds. The cannabinoid-rich resin remains intact, offering blends of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other nutrients.

Vape pens, edibles and tinctures typically contain THC or CBD that have been separated from other compounds. However, some of these products will contain both CBD and THC, likely resulting in reduced side effects.

If you are unsure which medical marijuana products to use, you will be able to ask your budtender at your local dispensary, and they will help point you to products that are rich in both THC and CBD. Our doctors will be here to recommend products and help you find what is right for you!
